One of my favorite ways to save money, is to make my own skincare products at home. Most store bought products can be fairly high in price, not to mention they’re full of harmful ingredients. I like knowing what exactly I’m using on my skin, so that’s why making my own products is so important to me. By making your own products, you can also completely customize your ingredients so that they target whatever skin concerns you have.
Below are a few recipes for 5 skincare products that you can easily whip up at home!
1.) Everyday Face Serum
This serum is perfect for any skin type and can be completely customized depending on your skincare goals. You first need to choose your carrier oil. I typically use jojoba oil since it is closest to our skins natural oils. It also has healing properties, anti-inflammatory agents, it’s moisturizing, reduces eczema and keeps acne at bay. You can use other oils too, like argan for anti-aging and dry skin. The only oil not recommended for a face serum would be fractionated coconut, since it is known to clog pores.
Aside from your base oil, you need to choose your essential oils. Make sure these are pure grade essential oils and NOT fragrance oils. Fragrance oils can harm your skin since you don’t know whats actually in them. Where as essential oils are used for many things, and are considered safe for skin when they’re properly diluted. Again you can choose whatever oils you want.
I like to use Frankincense – it’s one that has been used since ancient and biblical times. It helps with wrinkles, reduces scar appearances, and gives you a natural glow. Lavender is another good one – it reduces redness. blotchiness, and it can detoxify your skin. Tea Tree is great for acne prone or oily skin.
Lastly, you can add in some extra ingredients if you choose, such as Vitamin E or Rosehip. These aren’t necessary in a face serum, but they are great for added benefits. Vitamin E oil nourishes and hydrates. While Rosehip oil can help tighten the skin.
How To Make:
To make your serum, you’ll need a dropper bottle. I get these bamboo lid ones in a bulk on amazon.
Add in about 15-20 drops of essential oils total ( I do 5 frankincense, 5 lavender, 5 tea Trea, and 5 copaiba).
Then fill your bottle the rest of the way with your carrier oil.
If you’re adding optional ingredients like Vitamin E or Rosehip oil, then I usually do 5 drops max of each.
Add your lid and gently shake to mix well. Be sure to keep your serum stored in a cool dark place, out of sunlight!
2.) Facial Toner
This toner is so simple, and one of my favorite ways to brighten and refresh my skin. The first ingredient is Lemon juice. It’s great for reducing discoloration, dark spots, brightening, healing, and exfoliating. Be sure to use freshly squeezed juice from a lemon, or 100% lemon juice from the store. You don’t want the juice that has any additives in it.
The other and final ingredient is witch hazel. Witch hazel has so many amazing benefits, like removing excess oil and pulling out impurities deep within the skin. It also soothes and nourishes so mixing it with lemon will help dilute that a bit, and keep the lemon from burning.
How To Make:
In a glass spray bottle, fill your bottle 1/4 of the way with your fresh lemon juice and the rest of the way with your witch hazel.
Give a good shake to mix and shake before each use.
Toner was something I never used until now. It’s usually added after you wash your face, and before you apply a serum. I know some people who will take their toners with them for in the go, to give their skin a refresh throughout the day, but I manly apply mine at night.
3.) Makeup Remover
I use to use my kids baby wipes to remove my makeup, and if you’re a parent of a little one, then you know wipes are not cheap 😝. I wanted to find a way to make my own, so I no longer blew through the baby wipes as fast.
How to Make:
In a glass dropper bottle, add equal parts witch hazel with jojoba oil. Give a good shake before each use, and apply to your face with your hands.
Follow up with a cleanser of your choice, I like to use my homemade version that I shared below.
4.) Face Cleanser
This is one of my favorite products to use nightly. It leaves my face feeling so smooth and clean. I use to spend tons of money on face wash at the store, and most of the time they never fully cleaned my skin. This face wash recipe, really does seem to get every last bit of dirt or makeup that’s left behind on my skin.
You can play around with the oils you want, I like Lavender as a calming agent since I usually wash my face before bed. However, you don’t have to add essential oils, that’s totally optional.
How to Make:
In an 8 o glass twist cap or pump bottle, add 2/3 cup of distilled water, 1/3 cup of unscented liquid Bastille soap (I get this one from Amazon), and 1/2 tsp of jojoba oil.
If using oils, add 3-5 drops.
Be sure to shake the bottle a bit before each use, and apply directly to your skin, working in circular motions until your soap foams. Then rinse with lukewarm water and follow up with your toner.
5.) Lash and Brow Serum
If you’re like me, and your lashes aren’t very long or thick, then this serum is for you! I love having pretty full lashes, but all natural. None of that lash extension or glue ons for me, they’re just not my thing. Some of the best essential oils for hair growth and strenghtening are Cedarwood, Lavender, and Rosemary. I use all three in my serum, but you can use just 1or 2 if you’d prefer.
How to Make:
In a glass dropper bottle, or a lash tube bottle like this one, add 3 drops of each oil, and then fill the bottle 3/4 of the way with high quality castor oil. Give alittle shake and apply to your lashes or brows twice a day.
If you’re using a dropper bottle, you can apply your serum with a q tip.
It’s that easy to make your own skincare and beauty products at home, and it can be fun. You could easily turn this into a diy party and have all your girlfriends over to make whatever you want! If you end up making any one of these recipes, be sure to tag me so I can see. 🙂
